In Germantown, TN, city officials restricted in alderman’s email account because he refused to complete 45 minutes of cybersecurity training.

The Alderman, Dean Massey, is an insurance professional by trade and became a city official in 2016. his official email was restricted because he failed to complete a required cybersecurity course.

Who Else Had to Take the Course?

According to online court records, all Germantown city officials and employees how to complete the course. The notification included a warning that if they failed to do so they would lose their email account access.

Massey complained to Infosecurity Magazine that no official policy mandated the cyber training. He said he had refused to take the cyber course because he wasn’t aware of that being a requirement in the past.

Instead of complying, Massey set up a Gmail account and began using it for city business.
